RV Overnight Parking Etiquette

  • Always ask permission at private businesses. A polite request to the manager rarely gets refused, and confirms you understand it's a courtesy.
  • Park at the back of the lot away from store entrances and never block traffic flow or delivery zones.
  • Stay self-contained - no slides, awnings, leveling jacks beyond what's needed, chairs, grills, or generators on private retail lots.
  • One night only at retail stops. Rest areas, truck stops, and Boondockers Welcome hosts may allow longer stays per posted rules.
  • Support your host - shop at the store, eat at the restaurant, or buy from the winery. It's why these stops continue to welcome RVers.
  • Read the signs - posted signage trumps national policy. If a lot says "No Overnight Parking," respect it and move on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I park my RV at Walmart overnight?

Often yes, but it depends entirely on the individual store and local ordinances. Walmart's national policy permits overnight RV parking at the store manager's discretion, but many locations - especially in California, Florida, the Northeast, and resort towns - prohibit it. Always go inside, ask the manager, park in the back of the lot away from the entrance, stay only one night, and never deploy slides, awnings, or grills.

Is overnight RV parking free at Cracker Barrel?

Yes. Cracker Barrel offers free overnight parking for self-contained RVs in their long-vehicle spaces at most locations. The expectation is that you'll have a meal at the restaurant. Stop in, ask the manager for permission, and park where they direct you. One night only.

Are truck stops free for RVs to park overnight?

Yes. Pilot, Flying J, Loves, and TA truck stops welcome RVs overnight at no charge in their designated RV or auto sections. Do not park in trucker-only spaces - those are reserved for commercial drivers who are legally required to rest. Many truck stops also offer paid premium RV spots with electric and water hookups.

Can I sleep in my RV at a rest area?

Generally yes, but stay limits vary widely by state. Texas allows up to 24 hours, Oregon allows 12, California and Washington allow 8, while Florida and Virginia limit you to 2-3 hours. Toll-road service areas (NY Thruway, NJ Turnpike, MA Pike) typically prohibit overnight stays. Read posted signs at every stop.

Do I need to ask permission to park overnight?

At private businesses (Walmart, Cracker Barrel, Cabela's, casinos), yes - always ask the manager or security. At truck stops and rest areas, no permission is needed, but you must follow posted signs. For Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome, you must reserve the stay in advance through the network's app and coordinate directly with the host.
