How the calculator sizes a garage

  • Width: vehicle widths + clearance to each side wall + clearance between cars + side-wall storage and the bikes, motorcycle, or mower strip.
  • Depth: longest vehicle + walkway in front + space behind at the door + back-wall workbench or shelving.
  • Clearances: minimum 2 ft to side walls, 2 ft 6 in between cars, 2 ft walkway in front, 1 ft behind at the door; recommended 3 ft to side walls, 3 ft 6 in between cars, 3 ft walkway in front, 1 ft 6 in behind at the door; comfortable 3 ft 6 in to side walls, 4 ft 6 in between cars, 4 ft walkway in front, 2 ft behind at the door.
  • Rounding: sizes round up to whole feet, and width grows if needed so the garage doors fit with 1 ft side piers and a 2 ft post between doors.
  • Doors: 7 ft tall for most cars, 8 ft once a vehicle is 6 ft 4 in or taller. 9 ft singles or a 16 ft double for typical cars, 10 ft singles or an 18 ft double for wide vehicles.
  • Check fit: spare width and depth are shared in proportion to the clearances. A car is tight when it is below your chosen clearance, and doors can't open fully below about 2 ft. It does not fit if it overlaps a wall, is too long, or won't clear the door with 2 in to spare.
  • Vehicle sizes: presets are typical body dimensions with mirrors folded. Check your owner's manual for exact numbers, and add roof racks or a hitch.

Garage size FAQ

What are standard 2-car garage dimensions?

A standard 2-car garage is about 20 x 20 ft (400 sq ft) at minimum, and 24 x 24 ft (576 sq ft) is the recommended size for two midsize vehicles with room to open doors and walk around. Go to 24 x 26 ft or larger for full-size trucks, SUVs, or a workbench.

Is a 20x20 garage big enough for 2 cars?

Yes, but it is tight. Two midsize sedans fit in a 20 x 20 ft garage with about 2.5 ft between the cars and to each wall and under 4 ft of spare length, so doors open only part way and there is little room for storage. Full-size trucks and SUVs are a squeeze, so 22 x 22 ft or 24 x 24 ft is better.

How big is a 3-car garage?

A 3-car garage is typically 32 x 22 ft at minimum (704 sq ft) and 36 x 24 ft (864 sq ft) recommended. A 38 x 26 ft garage (988 sq ft) gives comfortable room for three full-size vehicles plus storage.

What size garage door do I need for a 2-car garage?

Use either one 16 x 7 ft double door or two 9 x 7 ft single doors. Choose an 18 ft double or 10 ft singles for wide vehicles, and an 8 ft tall door for full-size pickups, large SUVs, roof racks, or lifted trucks.

How much clearance do you need around a car in a garage?

Plan at least 2 to 3 ft on each side so doors can open, 3 to 4 ft between two cars, and a 3 ft walkway in front of the bumper. Leave 1 to 2 ft behind the car so the garage door closes clear, and at least 4 in of headroom under the door.
