Free Parking Garage Clearance Checker

A parking garage clearance checker compares your vehicle's total height, including roof racks and cargo, with a garage's posted clearance to show whether it will fit and how much room is left. Enter your measurements to see the margin in feet, inches, centimeters, and meters.

How to check parking garage clearance

  1. Measure the vehicle

Park on level ground and measure from the ground to the highest point of the vehicle, including antennas, roof racks, and cargo.

  2. Read the posted clearance

Note the clearance sign or bar at the garage entrance and any lower clearances posted for ramps or upper levels.

  3. Enter heights and a buffer

Enter the garage clearance, base vehicle height, roof accessory or cargo height, and a safety buffer, then check the result.

  4. Review the margin

Use the remaining clearance and the clears, tight, or does not fit result to decide whether to look for another garage.

How the result is decided

  • Clears with your safety buffer: the clearance is equal to or greater than total height plus buffer.
  • Tight clearance: the vehicle is shorter than the clearance, but by less than your buffer.
  • Does not fit: total height is equal to or taller than the posted clearance.

Parking garage clearance FAQ

How do I know if my car will fit in a parking garage?

Measure your vehicle from the ground to its highest point, including roof racks, cargo boxes, bikes, and antennas. If that total plus a safety buffer is at or below the clearance posted at the garage entrance, it should fit. If the total reaches the posted clearance, do not enter.

What is the typical parking garage clearance height?

Many US parking garages post clearances between about 6 ft 6 in and 7 ft (about 1.98 to 2.13 m). Van-accessible levels are often 8 ft 2 in (2.49 m). Clearance can vary inside the same garage, so always read the sign at each entrance and ramp.

How much safety buffer should I leave?

A buffer of 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) is a common starting point. Use more if you are unsure of your measurement, carry a loaded roof box, have air or lifted suspension, or the garage has steep ramp transitions, sprinkler pipes, or hanging signs.

Does a roof rack or cargo box count toward vehicle height?

Yes. Garage clearance applies to the highest point of the vehicle, so measure with racks, crossbars, roof boxes, bikes, rooftop tents, and any cargo installed. A roof-mounted bike can add three feet or more.

Is the posted clearance always accurate?

Not always. Resurfacing, added pipes, lights, or signs can lower the real clearance below the posted number. Treat this calculator as an estimate, watch for clearance bars, and never rely on it for a safety-critical decision.
